Artist's Comments

This image is inspired by a number of things... (and yeah, I know I've been submitting a lot of stuff lately...sorry.)

This is a self-portrait of me, on a typical walk back home from school. I had walked home on Monday, on my street... and in the quiet, in the stillness of a cool, grey day, I felt very spiritual... Like I was alone in the world. The crisp breeze...the smell of wet earth... my footsteps the only noise, it was very surreal. I often feel like that when I walk. Sort of washed out of reality, contemplative. It's rather hard to describe. The grey-ness of the image hence, is significant, because it's like the expression "grey zone".. where things are ambiguous, hard to define. I realize that the background is cheezy... and the negative effect is often over-used. Thing is though, I actually had planned it like that in my head, to indicate how loosely connected I felt with reality on that particular day. It was like I could see things, but I was detached from them. Anyway.

I wasn't sure if I should put this up, beause it's not one of my best visual works, not the most original... but it means more to me than a lot of the pics I do. Incidentally, it was also an exercise of fabric, lol. (My long winter coat is like that... and it's thick, which I find hard to illustrate.) The background is actually an image of the street I live on, as well.

Anyway... take this how you like. This is me "tout craché" as they say in French... (literally: "all spat out", but in this context, it means me "through and through." ) This image was also partially inspired by Yoko Kanno's "Walk in the Rain", from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, one of the deepest, most moving songs I know. I love it.

Oooh, interesting concept. And funny, I was thinking of "Rain" too-- gotta love how Steve Conte sounds. :D Last thing: love the folds on the coat.

I actually really like this piece! :) I find the expression on your face very interesting...you just look so thoughtful! But mostly I like what you did with the background in all its white/black glory! It makes for a very good effect!

I really like th backround you shoce, it's neat how you took a photo and instead of using the original you manipulated it, i really think thats creative. Also I think maybe you should watch the wrinkles in the coat you have this air brush/cell shading going on and it looks a bit odd, for me at least. The rest is amazing, especially the hair, the highlights are brilliant!

it just intirgues me how you can use marker for the hair...how you can use marker for anything....sigh...once again, something fantastic comes out of your finger tips....::narrows eyes:: freaking living god....

Have you ever heard gravity? Its on the wolf's rain sountrack. Its really moving like that song. I feel like this alot. Just kind of...not there...not part of anything, everything around me just an empty echo. I really like how you portrayed this. good job.
